To view in browser (and with fancy graphics!) click here Send President Biden a postcard to support carbon fee and dividend We want to show President Biden how popular carbon fee and dividend is, so CCL is asking volunteers to send 3,000 postcards to the White House for our April action. And here’s the good news: MyPostcard, the service we’re using to make and deliver the cards, is donating the 3,000 postcards, which normally are $3 apiece. Why postcards? We live in an age where most communication is done digitally — social media, text, email. Going old school with snail mail will help our message rise above the noise. We’re aiming to have the postcards delivered by Earth Day (April 22), when Biden will host a virtual climate summit with world leaders. Plus, now is a great time to make your voice heard, since the White House is announcing its plans for jobs, infrastructure, and climate. The whole process can be done on your smartphone. Complete instructions for downloading the app, accessing the $3 credit, and creating and sending your postcard can be found here. After your postcard is sent, log it in the Action Tracker (found on your dashboard on CCL Community), share your postcard on social media, and invite friends and family to send a postcard, too. If you’d rather not use the app, go ahead and send your own postcard to the White House. We’re already doing tremendous work building support for carbon pricing in Congress. Let’s flood the White House with postcards to show the president that Americans support a price on carbon with a dividend sent to households! In other news this week: Carbon pricing win in Canada: Last week, Canada’s Supreme Court ruled the federal government was on solid legal ground when it imposed a carbon tax on individual provinces. The policy, which utilizes a fee-and-dividend system, currently prices carbon at the equivalent of $24 per ton in U.S. dollars, and the government recently decided to increase the price to $135 by 2030. You can also connect with your nearest CCL chapter to take action in your community, or join one of CCL’s national online Action Teams to take action on specific topics like agriculture, health, faith, and more. Browse CCL Community’s Event Calendar to find upcoming events, trainings, and calls you can join. Lobbying: Chapters hold hundreds of meetings Last week, thousands of CCL volunteers held virtual meetings with House and Senate offices to build support for carbon pricing that gives revenue to households. Amy Bennett, CCL’s Director of Congressional Liaisons and Lobby Days, reports that as of Tuesday we had 380 meetings scheduled. Of those, 70 were face-to-face meetings with House and Senate members. As we do with all lobbying, volunteers submit minutes of the meetings held, and these notes help our D.C. staff to gauge where things stand on Capitol Hill with the legislation we support. So far, 262 reports have been submitted, and Amy is hoping the remaining reports will soon be filed. Many volunteers tweeted about their meetings, like the one with Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux (D-GA-07, shown above). Check out some of these posts on CCL’s Twitter feed or search #GrassrootsClimate on Twitter. November Meeting Our November meeting will be held after the National CCL Call. The call begins at 1pm on Saturday, November 14th, and we will meet via Zoom after the call concludes. Positive signs for carbon fee and dividend legislature This "Prospects for Bipartisan Climate-Change Legislation" webinar where Senators Murkowski (R) and Whitehouse (D) detail the prospects for durable, bi-partisan climate legislation next year, and recent precedent. There are many insights supporting CCL's narrative and strategy, including explicit support for some variation of Carbon Fee & Dividend. Regarding the interview, CCL's Brett Cease said, "[F]or those that don't have an hour, right at 23:57 is where Sen. Murkowski responds to her thoughts on a carbon price:“I’d like to see less of the regulatory and more of those market forces that come with that predictability and if that predictability means a price I’m happy to talk about it. I come from a state - let me tell you - where we have some of the highest energy costs in the country and and so how you can make sure that those that are most energy vulnerable are not hurt by this is has got to be a priority but I do think that this is this is one of those policy initiatives…I think is worth putting on the table for consideration.” To me, it's steps forward like this where we can see the impact of CCL's advocacy shining through and helping frame climate solutions - her identified priorities of effectiveness, predictability, and looking out for low and middle-income earners are all parts of CCL's lines in the sand for why we support the Energy Innovation Act." This CCL Southeast Regional Call (GA & NC) for group leaders.Watch for information about how the Southeast Director Donald Addu is very optimistic for the Energy Innovation & Carbon Dividend (currently known as HR 763 but will likely have a new number when re-introduced in the next Congress) to be passed. Instead of our regular monthly meeting for October, we will be joining other environmental groups to virtually attend Brad Rouse's "Climate Reality and What You Can Do About It" presentation on Sunday October 11th. Brad is a CCL member (woohoo!) and we are grateful for the opportunity to participate. Please be sure to register via the link at the bottom of the description of the event. We have also added this information to our Facebook page (link to our FB page is at the bottom of this email). Please share this opportunity with other like-minded folks - it's not just for CCL members - it's for everyone! (We will be cross-posting this information with the Indivisible Group in our area as well.) Climate Reality and What You Can Do About It Presented by: Brad Rouse Date/Time: Sunday, October 11th, 3:30pm Description: Brad Rouse will present "The Climate Reality and What You Can Do About It," as part of Climate Reality’s “24 Hours of Reality" Program. Brad first attended the Climate Reality training in 2012 in San Francisco, and in March of 2019 he served as a mentor to local Asheville residents in Atlanta with VP Gore and Rev. William Barber. This presentation contains much of the material from the Gore presentation, but is expanded to include material addressing how the listener can be involved in climate action. Basically, climate action should be taken at every level of a person’s influence, from self-understanding and awareness to carbon footprint to associations in the local community to influence that can be brought to bear at the state, national, and global level. The presentation provides an overview of the climate change issue and then focuses on starting where you are, looking at actions that have side benefits beyond climate, taking actions every day, and never giving up, even as we try to convince governments to change course. A native of NC, Brad spent his professional career involved in the fields of energy forecasting, electric utility resource planning, and personal financial planning. He has worked with over 100 utilities on utility planning issues and he is now focused on climate change solutions. Brad and Alice Wyndham co-founded Energy Savers Network (ESN) to expand low-income energy efficiency in our area. Since 2017, ESN has helped over 300 income qualified families in Buncombe County reduce their energy consumption. Brad is active in lobbying for a price on carbon through the Citizens Climate Lobby and he is a contributor to CleanTechnica on carbon pricing and the energy transition. We now have our regularly scheduled time of meeting on the second Saturday of the month from 1-2:30pm. This aligns with the monthly International CCL call that we can tune in individually to watch, then meet directly via Zoom after the call wraps up. (Usually about 1:30 or 1:45, so I set our chapter meeting to start at 1:30 just in case.) This month we'll catch up on what smaller groups within our chapter have been up to (calling/texting potential environmental voters, contacting WLOS meteorologists) and talking about how to get more involved! (For those of you beer lovers, we could also use your help on another potential project, too!) The CCL Call will feature Dr. Kim Cobb from Georgia Tech: Alarmed by what their research on climate change is showing them, a growing number of scientists are stepping out of the lab to advocate for solutions. Dr. Kim Cobb, a professor at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech, is among those speaking out. A leading expert in the study of corals and how climate change is affecting them, Dr. Cobb was devastated when, during a 2016 research trip to the South Pacific, she saw that most of the coral reef she had been studying was obliterated. "For me, it was a bellwether event... I decided to go 'all in' on climate solutions, personally and professionally." Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Oh, and special thanks to Courtney Umphlett for donating the use of her Zoom line!
